The Jeep Cherokee has often been awarded the honor of being called the most successful Jeep ever. It is considered the ultimate SUV or sports utility vehicle.
The Cherokee was originally launched in 1974 as a sportier version of the 1960s Jeep Wagoneer. The 1974 Cherokee was pretty much the Wagoneer with 2 doors and a lower price tag. In 1977, a four door Cherokee was introduced as well.
It was in 1984 that the Jeep Cherokee really got its own identity. The changes included a 7-inch shorter wheel base, a 21 inch reduction in length and a much lighter weight than before. In fact the new Cherokee was almost 1000 pounds lighter than the earlier models and that accounted for a significantly higher mileage and improved maneuverability.
The Jeep Cherokee was also built using a Unibody rather than a chassis and frame construction. The '84 Cherokee was powered by a 4 cylinder model or a 2.8 liter V.6. The Cherokee also offered two 4wd systems - the Command-Trac and the Selec-Trac.
In terms of design and comfort many additions were made to the '84 Cherokee. A tall greenhouse improved visibility for the driver and passengers, a simple dash and control layout and a capacity to seat five.
There were three models. The base Cherokee, the deluxe Pioneer and the active Chief. With 78,000 Cherokees sold in the first year of launch alone and 3 magazines awarding it the 4x4 of the year title, the Cherokee was definitely a winner. The Laredo trim was introduced to the Cherokee family in 1985.
In 1986, the Jeep Cherokee made a 4-cylinder engine the standard which increased horsepower by a good 12 horses. The Cherokee showed better start up and a more even drive. In 1987 with the introduction of the 4.0 inline 6 cylinder engine, the Cherokee was spitting pure fire.
The 1990s gave birth to a right hand drive model of the Cherokee. This allowed it to enter markets in UK, Australia and Japan. In fact, almost half the Jeeps sold overseas are Cherokees. With minor changes to design and technology the Cherokee saw many releases over the years.
The last year for the Jeep Cherokee was 2001 after which the Grand Cherokee dominated the market.
