With gas prices reaching astronomical heights Jeep has introduced the Jeep Liberty diesel also known as the The Jeep Liberty CRD within the United States of America. The Liberty diesel has already been on the European market for some time and found a fair amount of success as well. If you are wondering why you've never heard of it then that's probably because the Liberty diesel goes by the name of Cherokee in Europe.
The Jeep Liberty diesel like most diesels does create a bit of a clatter especially when idle and on start up. However, it more than makes up for any noise and rattling with immense torque and hauling capacity. The Liberty diesel has a 2.8 liter, 4 cylinder, DOHC, 16 valve, direct injection CRD engine. With 160 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque the Liberty diesel is one great towing machine.
The biggest concern about the Jeep Liberty diesel is of course the noise factor. It would be unfair to say that there is no discernable difference. There definitely is a humming when the Liberty diesel is on high speeds. However, the hum is not unpleasant and once you're used to it, it fades like white noise. However, on start up and acceleration the noise requires some getting used to.
The Liberty diesel is also great at conserving its warmth. Even in cold temperatures it requires just a few seconds on the glow plugs and in warm temperatures there is no lag between turning the key and starting the engine.
Overall, the Jeep Liberty diesel is a good diesel powered SUV. If lower fuel prices and a better environment excite you then this is your vehicle!
