The Jeep Wagoneer
The First Ever SUV

Launched in 1962 the Jeep Wagoneer was touted to be the first truly civilian Jeep catering to the comfort of the common man as well as adventurous spirit of the thrill seeker. The Wagoneer was a great leap forward from the Willys station wagon. It is also often credited as being the first real Sport Utility Vehicle or SUV.

Designed by Brooks Stevens for Kaiser Industries, the Jeep Wagoneer was built from ground up and absolutely fresh in design as well as functionality.

The signature trapezoidal wheel openings were also introduced with the Wagoneer. The front end of the Wagoneer maintained the Willys wagon look with the distinct Jeep grille.

However, the outer edges of the fender and the hood were extended forward so that they surrounded the grille and the front lights. This gave the Wagoneer a spanking new look that was well received.

The Jeep Wagoneer was introduced as a 4 door SUV available in 2WD and 4WD. This was indicative of the fact that the Wagoneer was aimed at conquering not only the 4WD market but also the conventional car market. The Wagoneer was equipped with complete passenger luxury, convenience and ease of use.

The much popular Jeep Cherokee was an offshoot of the Wagoneer. The full size Jeep Wagoneer was in production till 1991. A luxury version called the Grand Wagoneer was also introduced in 1984. However, with the introduction of the Grand Cherokee in 1993, Jeep stopped production of the Wagoneer.
